The National Museum of San Matteo is one of the most important museums of medieval Italian art. It is an important reference point to understand the vitality of the maritime city and its territory in past centuries. In fact, it boasts extraordinary collections such as ceramics, in particular, medieval Islamic pottery, important stone sculptures of the Pisan school, as well as wooden sculptures. Painting then occupies an important section that starts from the Middle Ages with the marvelous painted crosses and the tables with a gold background, to arrive until the seventeenth century. Among the artists: Giunta Pisano, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Simone Martini, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, Ghirlandaio and many others.

This guided tour is conceived for a wider audience and aims at an exemplary reading of the most significant works by including them in their historical, social and religious context.
