Villa di Castello was built next to a cistern (castellum aquae) of a Roman aqueduct from which the town takes its name. As early as 1477 a property of the De 'Medici family was the house where Cosimo de' Medici, the future Grand Duke, spent his childhood.

The visit of the garden (the villa itself, home of the Accademia della Crusca, can not be visited) includes the geometric garden, one of the best preserved specimens of the Italian garden, the citrus garden, the animal cave, the secret gardens and the wild garden with the famous Apennine fountain, created by Bartolomeo Ammannati.
