Viareggio, known today for his lively Carnival, was founded in 1172 as "castrum di Via Regia", i.e. Castle built at the end of the via Regia, so named in honour of Emperor Barbarossa. In modern times the European nobility chose the sea town as a place to stay in winter turning Viareggio into a place of leisure renowned throughout the continent.

Our guided tour of Viareggio begins in Piazza Shelley with the Palace built by Pauline Bonaparte Borghese, sister of Napoleon. It continues with a stroll towards the dock and the Burlamacco channel, the ancient heart of Viareggio. From there we walk down the long promenade characterized by numerous Art Nouveau buildings, some of them decorated by the artist Galileo Chini.
