Garfagnana: The Garfagnana, situated in the northwestern part of Tuscany, comprises the upper valley of the river 'Serchio'. Embedded between two mountain chains which differ from each other in social, historic and geomorphological perspectives (i.e., Apuan Alps and the tosco-emiglian Apennine), the Garfagnana is one of the most enticing regions for hiking in Tuscany.
BargaAlong the river Serchio you explore a rather unknown part of Tuscany: serene, romantic, wild and far away from mass tourism. Our hiking tour starts in Barga, a small, medieval town surrounded by the Apennine and the Apuan Alps. Walking on a mule track, we pass vineyards and old chestnut trees before reaching a strategically important stronghold with the remains of a medieval fortress. From here, you will enjoy a stunning view on the two mountain chains. The way back to Barga leads through rural settlements, olive groves and vineyards.
Difference in altitude: ca. 600 meters (1968 feet)
